2018 Reading: Every Nine Seconds

#22 A book with an LGBTQ+ protagonist

They just rolled a whole bunch of stuff from the show in here, didn't they? 4 year-old Justin in the liquor store? Name dropping Q-Mart? The grand opening of Babylon? Just put every little thing in there to show that you know what you're talking about and try to link everything together like a pretty little package.

Sorry, I just thought it was ridiculous that Justin was in the book when it was supposed to be just about Brian and Michael. All I want out of life is Brian and Michael. All I ever wanted from the show from the very beginning was Brian and Michael. And I never got it. Except in my dreams. And fanfiction.

UGH, WHY, BRIAN? WHY?!?!?!

"Dear Michael,
Remember, with you, it's real. With everyone else, it's
just all about sex.
Love,
Brian"

*ugly crying*

2018 Reading: Eat Pray Love

#50 A book recommended by someone else taking the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge

I didn't know what I would think about this book when my sister suggested I read it. I've never seen the movie (had no real desire to, honestly) and had not looked into it too much.

Some of the author's thought processes and descriptions of feelings and rituals that she had observed made me stop and think of all the things I knew about different religions ans also made me question my own sense of spirituality. I'm not a spiritual or religious person, but I like to think that there is some form of higher power. I just don't know what that is. Most of the time I don't think about it at all, and that seems to be working just fine for me.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would and I may very well give the movie a try now.

2018 Reading: Ten Count Vol. 3 & 4 (2 books)

Woo, heating up a bit in here. I'm actually really enjoying this series. We're getting to the heart of the matter now with Shirotani's germophobia (if you can even call it that at this point).

Can't wait for more!

2018 Reading: Poisoned Apples

"To My Sheep,
Wherever You Are"

I followed advice. Left you alone. Stopped
scanning tree trunks for snagged fleece
till I was so tired I napped under a haystack,
only to open my eyes to that empty,
overgrown meadow. Again.

But I'm happy now. I have a new job
at the library, where all the books are arranged
so they're easy to find. Even then there are no
guarantees, which is why I steal my favorites
and stack them beside my bed. I keep them

safe from the man who likes to read
in the tub, the toddler with the Sharpie markers,
the woman who stands at the circulation desk
telling me she's looked everywhere. Really,
she doesn't know what happened, it's just
gone. (pg 45)

Loved this. So much.

DON'T JUDGE ME!

2018 Reading: The Color of Magic

#17 A book set on a different planet

I've already mentioned that Fantasy is not really my cup of tea when it comes to books, but I have to admit, this one struck me as something that I might be able to continue on with because it reminds me heavily of things like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Utterly confusing but also very intriguing.

I will admit that Terry Pratchett has the type of sense of humor that I like, usually very dry and indirect. The characters, at least some of them, are hilarious (especially Death) and even though I can get very confused sometimes, I like the way he describes things. He uses familiar things to base descriptions on rather than trying to describe strictly by sight which, I admit, just makes my brain hurt.

#15 A book set at sea

And of course "at sea" simply means "on a body of water" because GoodReads said I could. So there.

I think I'm going to start supplementing more Poirot books into my reading lists. They are actually attention grabbing and easy to read. That would also mean that I would have to finish up the Roderick Alleyn series by Ngaio Marsh as well, which I totally do not mind at all.

I should have guessed the outcome of this book right away, but I must admit that I was completely surprised by "who done it."

2018 Reading: Ten Count Vol. 2

It took FOREVER for our library to finally get the second volume of this, but you better believe as soon as I put it into the system (that's what I do, BTW, I'm in charge of graphic novels) I checked it out to myself before anyone else could get their hands on it. UNF! Need more!

2018 Reading: Twelfth Night

#20 A book with characters who are twins

Another Shakespeare play that I have seen many times and know the plot, but never actually read it.

I think the Fool is my favorite character for many reasons. He seems to be the one sane one in the bunch at times and knows exactly what to say to make the situation right, but at the same time, excuses himself from all responsibility by acting the ignorant drunkard. Therefore, no one expects anything of him but to sing occasionally.

It's a great story.
